Once a casting has gone into production the negative effects of casting related defects can be substantial.  Internal profits are reduced, casting deliveries can be missed, rework costs increase and customer relations can be strained. Addressing casting defects are typically carried out by the "Trial and Error Method": by making modifications to the tooling, producing samples and carrying out some non-destructive testing. Sometimes this approach addresses the issue, but more often than not the defect is still present or a different problem is created.
