Prof. Christoph Beckermann Selected to Receive Industry Awards for Research

March 2010. Christoph Beckermann has recently been selected to receive awards from several societies involved in the metal casting industry.

He was presented with the “Sir Humphrey Davy Scientific Merit Award” from the Magnesium Division of the American Foundry Society (AFS) in April 2009 during the 113th Metalcasting Congress in Las Vegas, Nevada. He received the “Thomas E. Barlow Award of Honor” from the Steel Founders' Society of America (SFSA) during their 63rd annual Technical & Operating conference held during December 2009 in Chicago. Organized in 1902 as a steel foundry trade association, the society has presented only 23 such awards. As a part of the award, a one-time ,500 scholarship will be established by the society in Beckermann's name in the department of mechanical and industrial engineering for a junior or senior who plans to attend graduate school. The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's (TMS) “Bruce Chalmers Award” was established in 1989 by the Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division and is named for Bruce Chalmers, widely acknowledged as the father of modern solidification science. The 2010 award, which recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the science and technology of solidification processing, was presented to Beckermann during the recent TMS Annual meeting in Seattle in February.

Beckermann is internationally recognized for his research in solidification phenomena and materials processing. His current research activities include modeling of hot tearing and dimensional tolerances, feeding and porosity formation, inclusion formation and transport, as well as microstructure and grain growth in the presence of convection.

MAGMA congratulates Prof. Beckermann on this well-deserved recognition. We look forward to continuing to work together with him in the future and to his valuable contributions to modeling and simulation of casting processes.
