Use MAGMA ECONOMICS to Consider and Evaluate MAGMASOFT® Simulation Results for Steel Casting
MAGMA ECONOMICS enables the quantitative evaluation of costs, energy consumption and CO₂ emissions together with quality criteria directly in MAGMASOFT®.
MAGMA ECONOMICS Example:
Insulating Sleeves & More Return Material or Exothermic Sleeves & Less Return Material: Which Is the Better Solution?
- Step 1: In the Economics Perspective in MAGMASOFT®, first, the existing simulation project was evaluated based on a few cost items: Sleeve costs, Metal costs, Cleaning costs. The total cost estimate is €1,038.
- In a 2nd step, a "what-if" scenario was developed:
The following assumptions were made:
- Insulating sleeves: +€3
- Reduced feeder volume (-47 kg) and, thus, reduced metal costs: -€47
- Reduced feeder area and, thus, lower cleaning costs: -€60
- Total cost savings estimated at €76 per part
- Step 3:
Based on this positive assumption, MAGMASOFT® was used to both implement and simulated the new risering design. For both feeder variants, the simulation showed similar solidification patterns and comparable porosity.
This confirmed the technical feasibility.
- In the simulation, the actual cost savings were as follows:
- Feeders: +€30
- Return material: -€64
- Cleaning costs: -€92
- Total costs: -€126
- This resulted in a total cost savings of €126 … despite the supposedly higher feeder costs.
At the same time,
Mission accomplished: Despite the higher feeder costs, overall cost savings of approx. 12% were achieved along with a reduction in the carbon footprint of approx. 9%.
